Tubal Occlusion and Vasectomy – patient information to assist informed consent
This patient education pamphlet provides treatment information on tubal occlusion (also called “tubal ligation”). The vasectomy procedure is discussed but in less detail. The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons pamphlet “Vasectomy” can provide more information.
The topics discussed include: the main reasons patients consider tubal occlusion, the main advantages of tubal occlusion, what to expect before surgery, recovery after tubal occlusion and the possible complications of surgery.
This leaflet can be a useful tool for patients considering tubal occlusion surgery for permanent contraception. Laparoscopic tubal occlusion is described in detail, along with accompanying illustrations of the different methods used during surgery. The surgical procedures mini-laparotomy and laparotomy are also discussed.
Tubal occlusion and vasectomy are described in plain English to assist the patients’ understanding of health information and to help patients make informed decisions. The Obstetrics and Gynaecology patient information leaflets are printed in five-colour on high-quality A4 sheets.
