Pelvic Inflammatory Disease – patient information to assist informed consent
This patient education pamphlet provides treatment information on pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). The topics discussed include: symptoms of PID, risk factors of PID and the diagnosis of PID. The diagnostic tests detailed include ultrasound examination, the cervical screening test (CST) and laparoscopy, among others. Antibiotics as a first-line treatment option is discussed in detail, including the possibility of treatment in hospital.
This leaflet can be a useful tool for patients needing surgery to drain a pelvic abscess. The surgical techniques described include: laparoscopy, ultrasound-guided drainage, vaginal drainage and laparotomy. The possible complications of PID, such as infertility and ectopic pregnancy, are discussed to highlight the importance of early detection and treatment.
PID and the available treatments are described in plain English to assist the patients’ understanding of health information and to help patients make informed decisions. The Obstetrics and Gynaecology patient information leaflets are printed in five-colour on high-quality A4 sheets.
