Laparoscopy – patient information to assist informed consent
This patient education pamphlet provides treatment information on the laparoscopy procedure. The topics discussed include: diagnostic laparoscopy and operative laparoscopy, what to expect before surgery, recovery after laparoscopy and the possible complications of surgery.
Diagnostic laparoscopy is mentioned for patients needing investigation of problems such as abnormal uterine bleeding, painful or irregular periods, pelvic pain and infertility.
This leaflet can be a useful tool for patients considering operative laparoscopy for the treatment of gynaecological conditions such as uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), urinary incontinence and uterine prolapse, among others. Other surgical techniques mentioned include tubal ligation, some types of hysterectomy and the removal of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD).
The laparoscopy procedure is described in plain English to assist the patients’ understanding of health information and to help patients make informed decisions. The Obstetrics and Gynaecology patient information leaflets are printed in five-colour on high-quality A4 sheets.
