Epiphora or Watery Eye – patient information to assist informed consent

This RANZCO patient education pamphlet provides information on epiphora. The topics discussed include:
-   Normal tear production and drainage
-   Anatomy of the eye, lacrimal glands and nasolacrimal duct
-   Symptoms and causes of epiphora
-   Dye test to assist diagnosis.

Non-surgical treatment options are described for patients whose watery eyes may be caused by problems such as a foreign body in the eye, environmental irritants or dry-eye syndrome.

Surgery to treat epiphora is described for patients who may have a blockage somewhere in the lacrimal drainage system.
The surgical methods discussed include:
-   Syringing and probing
-   DCR procedure
-   Lester Jones tube.

This leaflet can be a useful tool for patients as the benefits, risks and limitations of the different treatments are discussed. The possible complications of epiphora surgery are listed on page 4 to assist the informed-consent process.

Mi-tec publishes 16 Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology patient information brochures. Epiphora surgery is described in plain English to assist the patients’ understanding of health information and to help patients make informed decisions. The RANZCO patient information brochures are printed in five-colour on high-quality A4 sheets.
