Chronic Pelvic Pain – patient information to assist informed consent”
This patient education pamphlet provides treatment information on chronic pelvic pain (CPP). The topics discussed include: chronic pelvic pain and cyclic chronic pelvic pain, the possible causes of CPP and the diagnosis of CPP. The possible causes of CPP discussed include:
- Disorders of the female pelvic organs, such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and fibroids
- Disorders of the urinary tract, such as interstitial cystitis
- Disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Disorders of the musculo-skeletal system, such as fibromyalgia
This leaflet can be a useful tool for patients considering medical or surgical treatment of CPP. Medical treatments described include: the oral contraceptive pill, pain-relieving medication and GnRH antagonists, among others. The surgical procedures discussed are: laparoscopy, hysterectomy, neuroablative surgery, and cancer surgery.
