Weight Management during Pregnancy – patient information to assist informed consent
This patient education pamphlet provides information on managing weight during pregnancy (primarily regarding women who are overweight or obese before pregnancy). The topics discussed include: body mass index (BMI), health risks related to obesity, and healthy weight gain during pregnancy.
Obesity during pregnancy and its health risks to the mother and baby are also discussed. These risks include early miscarriage, gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia.
This leaflet can be a useful tool for pregnant women as it includes information on the importance of healthy eating, suggestions for nutritious meals and snacks, and which foods to avoid (including avoiding alcohol). Physical activity during pregnancy is discussed in detail, including suitable exercises for pregnant women, what types of exercise should be avoided and helpful exercise tips.
