Heavy Menstrual Bleeding – patient information to assist informed consent”
This patient education pamphlet provides treatment information on heavy menstrual bleeding (also referred to as “HMB”). The causes of heavy menstrual bleeding are discussed, including dysfunctional uterine bleeding, uterine fibroids and adenomyosis. Diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound scans, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy are detailed.
This leaflet can be a useful tool for patients considering medical therapies or surgery to treat HMB. Hormonal treatments and non-hormonal treatments are described separately for patients that may need medication. The medications mentioned include the oral contraceptive pill, a progestogen intrauterine device (IUD) and tranexamic acid. The surgical procedures discussed are: endometrial ablation during hysteroscopy, myomectomy and hysterectomy.
The different treatments of HMB are described in plain English to assist the patients’ understanding of health information and to help patients make informed decisions. The Obstetrics and Gynaecology patient information leaflets are printed in five-colour on high-quality A4 sheets.
