The Prenatal Human Cranium - Normal and Pathologic Development

The Prenatal Human Cranium deals with the development of the human cranium before birth, and is intended for both the medical and the dental team dealing with child development. It is divided into two parts, one focusing on normal development and the other on pathologic development. In a systematic, atlas-like section on normal development, an account is given of where, when and how bone development takes place both within the individual bones and as regards the developmental sequence among the bones. Details are also given of brain development and the development of the peripheral nervous system, because research during the last eight years has shown a close relationship between brain/nerve development and bone/tooth development. This interrelationship has enabled a bridge to be built between basic science and clinical experience and has created the basis for the biologic boundary area, neuro-osteology, which will be increasingly important in the years to come.* All illustrations have the same orientation, thus making it easier for the reader to compare courses of development, size relationships, etc.* The cranium straightforwardly reveals defects in the brain and in the peripheral nervous system. Therefore the atlas section of the book also focuses on the central nervous system.* Anatomic details are carefully indicated on all the illustrations. In nearly all cases, the examinations needed by whomever uses the atlas for daily diagnostic work are easy to apply and inexpensive to perform.* The last part of the book shows how to evaluate pathologic craniums, and how far we have come in this entirely uncultivated field of medicine.
