Basic Pathology
Key Points taken from Preface:
In more than one way this sixth edition of Basic Pathology is a new book; both the illustrations and the text have been extensively revised, and in some cases the text has been rewritten completely. Changes that are worthy of mention are as follows:
* The majority of the old black and white photographs have been replaced by over 300 full-colour gross and microscopic pictures. In addition, about 200 new pieces of four colour art - schematics, flow charts, and diagrammatic representations of diseases - have been added.
* In response to suggestions from many students and instructors, a new chapter including selected common disorders of skin have been added. In addition, pediatric disorders previously covered in several different chapters have been consolidated into a new chapter on Genetic and Pediatric Diseases. Included in this new chapter are some general topics in pediatric pathology such as the principles of teratology, pediatric tumors and perinatal infections.
* To achieve a better integration of clinical and anatomic pathology the discussion of laboratory diagnosis of selected disorders has been expanded to include syphilis, ischematic heart disease, disorders of the thyroid and adrenal cortex, and genetic disorders.
The emphasis on clinicopathologic correlations is maintained, and wherever understood the impact of molecular pathology on the practise of medicine is highlighted. In the five years since the previous edition, spectacular discoveries relating to the molecular basis of common diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, obesity, and diabetes have been made. Discussion has been restricted to information that is both up-to-date and established, with the goal of providing a balanced, accurate and up-to-date picture of the central body of pathology.
