Hemostasis in Anaesthesia
Hemostasis is the stopping or slowing of circulation (blood); managing coagulation during surgery is one of the anaesthetist's primary responsibilities. Proper patient management requires that the anaesthetist understand the normal haemostasis process and haemodynamics, along with a clear grasp of how to prevent complications and how to manage them when they do occur.
This text will be a very practical book that brings together clinical information on haemostasis during surgery as well as monitoring the patient and handling hemostatic failure when it happens. For instance, 10% to 20% of cardiac surgical patients have abnormal hemostasis requiring transfusion of blood products, and about 3% require reoperation for excessive postoperative haemorrhage. The anaesthetists knowledge of the hemostatic abnormalities that can occur permits effective treatment of the bleeding diathesis, and minimises ineffective or toxic therapies.
